Kempower Charging Site Launches at St-Onge Ford, Emphasizing Power Sharing and Future Upgrades for Dealership EV Charging

Dynamic power sharing and upgradability are both key reasons customers choose Kempower for auto dealership EV charging. The team at the St-Onge Ford dealership in Shawinigan, Quebec is no different. They believe in electrification and, even more, that the public has easy accessibility to it. Despite major grant hurdles, on Jan. 7, 2025, St-Onge Ford independently commissioned a new charging site that will offer the fastest charging and broad convenience to the nearly 50,000 people in Shawinigan and the neighboring Gran-Mère areas. Although a major investment for St-Onge Ford, the dealership was driven by their strong commitment to the importance of electrification.

The site is the first of its kind and features two Kempower CCS chargers, one with 250-kW and the other with 150 kW of power, each equipped with two charging plugs. This setup will allow for four cars to be charging at the same time.

Located near shopping spots like Tim Hortons, the site is designed for easy access with intentional details including spacing of the chargers – about 30 feet apart – allowing for parking flexibility including for larger fleet vehicles.

Moving forward with this site was not a question for us. We saw the value of electrification in Shawinigan and are pleased to partner with Kempower for its dynamic power sharing capabilities, upgradability options, and proven excellence,” said Christine Lesage, Marketing Director at St-Onge Ford.

There is a growing demand for more charging stations in the area, and St-Onge Ford is already planning an expansion. At this location, they have the ability to upgrade the modules to 400 and 200 kW of power, as well as add up to four additional satellites, making room for another eight vehicles.

Alongside this project was partner Konnecta, a Quebec turnkey support service for transport electrification.

“We have worked with Kempower to implement numerous charging infrastructures across Quebec and we continue to partner with them because the end customer is consistently satisfied,” said Sébastien Pothier, president at Konnecta. “For the St-Onge Ford site, upgradability was key, and we’re excited to see how the site evolves.”

Kempower is proud to partner with St-Onge Ford and Konnecta as they both pave the way for a more sustainable future in Quebec, offering both immediate and long-term solutions for the growing electric vehicle market and auto dealership EV charging.

Proviridis pioneers underground truck charging infrastructure using Kempower solution

ROUSSET, France – A new innovation in the installation of truck charging which will support electrification of the logistics industry has been developed by French clean energy infrastructure specialist Proviridis.

Proviridis, a Kempower business partner in France, has designed a unique underground solution to the configuration of Finnish DC fast-charging manufacturer Kempower’s equipment which eliminates the need to reserve on-ground space for charging hardware. This allows existing parking space at depots to be retained, resolving a key issue faced by fleet and truck charging operators electrifying their sites. The innovation was developed during an installation project at Proviridis’ multi-energy truck station in Saint Quentin Fallavier.

With space being a key challenge for the logistics market, Proviridis trialed an underground setup of Kempower’s Control Unit solution, which is connected to and receives its power from a nearby 600kW Power Unit installed above ground. The successful trial is the first example of an underground solution being used to overcome the obstacle of space limitation at truck charging locations, and offers a cheaper alternative to procuring and installing the overhead gantry solution currently used at many logistics depots.

The underground positioning of the hardware offers the additional advantage of protection from damage, and the distributed design of the charging infrastructure allows the dynamic allocation of available power from the Power Unit to up to 8 chargers. The technology is compatible with both the overground Kempower Satellite Charger and the dock-based Control Unit, meaning the charger configuration can be designed flexibly to suit the varying layouts and specific needs of different sites. Bespoke configurations are already being developed for early-adopting clients based on the pilot implementation of the solution.

The Kempower Control Unit is durable across a wide spectrum of temperatures and conditions, requires minimal ventilation, and can cater for a wide range of customer needs. These are features which perfectly place the Kempower solution for this type of charging configuration in a logistics environment.

The adaptability of the infrastructure means that it could also become a solution for e-bus depots, which have the same space constraints to consider when installing charging solutions.

While traditional charging equipment can cause up to 20% of existing truck parking capacity to be lost, Kempower has already gained recognition for the efficient size footprint of its overground Satellites. The newly patented solution by Proviridis for installing Kempower’s Control Unit has the potential to even further increase return on investment and consistency of profitability forecasts by ensuring vehicles don’t need to be sacrificed due to a lack of space.

The innovation is currently being piloted at Proviridis’ Saint Quentin Fallavier V-GAS station, which specializes in low-carbon transport fuels including BioNGV and hydrogen alongside EV charging. During the next phase of plans, Proviridis will roll out the solution across France, exclusively using Kempower’s fast-charging equipment.

Cédric Moret, Kempower’s Head of Sales for the French market, said: “Many fleet operators are committed to more sustainable operations, but they require solutions that maintain the capacity and normal functioning of their locations in order to protect their business. It has unfortunately become commonplace for some loss of parking space to become normalized when installing charging infrastructure, which is why we are so excited by the new possibilities created with Proviridis’ underground solution.”

Olivier Verdu, Technical Director at Proviridis, added:

We have a long history of investing in innovations like integrating battery storage vehicle charging at our multi-energy stations and are proud to have pioneered this new solution using Kempower technology. Robustness and flexibility are two essential elements for trucking equipment and the Kempower Control Unit proved to be uniquely positioned to withstand the necessary conditions for the underground solution to work. The product is durable across a wide spectrum of temperatures and conditions, requires minimal ventilation, and can cater for a wide range of customer needs. These are features which perfectly place the Kempower solution for this type of charging configuration in a logistics environment.

Revel and Kempower provide Manhattan with DC fast charging hub

Rapid expansion of EV infrastructure requires suppliers who can scale production and delivery, while maintaining consistent quality. When Brooklyn-based electric mobility and infrastructure provider, Revel, sought to become the leading provider of faster public charging stations in New York City, the company partnered with Kempower to get the job done.

Kempower’s chargers are known for their durability, efficiency, and technological innovation, which ensures uptime and reliable performance. Downtime in charging infrastructure can result in lost revenue and dissatisfied users, which means having a partner like Kempower that can guarantee robust solutions is essential.

Relationships with reliable suppliers like Kempower are critical to companies like Revel, as the industry rapidly expands EV charging infrastructure across North America,” said Tomi Ristimäki, CEO of Kempower. “We are delighted to help provide a proven product to a market in need.”

In September 2024, Kempower and Revel celebrated the opening of a state-of-the-art DC fast charging hub at Pier 36 in lower Manhattan. The new charging station brings the fastest charging on the market to the hundreds of thousands of rideshare and taxi drivers that go in and out of Manhattan every day.

“With our new Pier 36 charging station, Revel is bringing the fastest charging on the market directly to rideshare and taxi drivers, so they can more easily utilize EVs – saving them money and saving us all from breathing in more needless car pollution,” said Frank Reig, Revel’s co-founder & CEO.

Under New York City’s Green Rides Initiative, the city’s rideshare fleet is required to be made up of either zero-emission vehicles or wheelchair-accessible vehicles by 2030. With these proposed guidelines, NYC will become the first large city in the world to have a rideshare fleet that is entirely zero emissions or wheelchair accessible. Thus, this strategic EV charging site is set to become a highly sought after hub and a model for other cities in North America.

The charging site is situated in the Lower East Side over the East River, between the Manhattan and Williamsburg Bridges. Needless to say, a charging station on a pier, next to highway, and on New York City land, was a complex project for Revel, Kempower, and other partners. This is one of very few charging stations in Manhattan and is the largest universal charging station below 42nd Street. The Pier 36 project demonstrates a big step toward Kempower’s vision of making EV charging solutions accessible to everyone, everywhere.

“This prime location ensures maximum convenience for drivers, further encouraging the shift toward electric vehicles,” said Jed Routh, Kempower vice president of markets and products, North America. “Kempower’s dynamic load-sharing technology and well-designed user-interface make charging extremely easy for EV drivers.”

Each company has unique operational challenges and demands when building EV infrastructure. Kempower’s ability to provide tailored solutions, whether for urban fleets, public charging, or rapid deployment, is crucial to meeting Revel’s specific needs. This flexibility ensures that Revel can adapt to different locations, vehicle types, and energy needs without compromising on performance.

Excellent Charging Experience for Nordic EV drivers Provided by Recharge

For over three years, the Nordic’s leading charge point operator Recharge has cooperated with Kempower to provide a comprehensive and user-friendly fast-charging network for EV drivers in the Nordics. “We appreciate Kempower’s efforts to continuously improve its user interfaces and charging experience with data and knowledge,” says Elise Thorvaldsen, Head of Communication and Customer Experience at Recharge.

The partnership between Kempower and Recharge started in 2020. Recharge was looking for an EV charging partner who could support its goal of expanding the fast-charging network in the Nordics. Additionally, it wanted to provide the best charging experience for EV drivers. The Recharge team contacted Kempower and had a meeting in Finland to discuss its EV charging equipment needs.

We wanted a partner who could provide fast charging solutions with a small footprint, intelligent load balancing, and above all, a focus on customer experience

Elise Thorvaldsen, Head of Communication and Customer Experience at Recharge

In July 2020, the companies set up the first test charging station at Shell Espa Bolleland in Norway. The DC fast charging station included a Kempower Power Unit with six Kempower Satellite charging satellites. It was the first of the company’s many Kempower charging stations available in Norway today.

Recharge has operations in Norway, Finland, and Sweden. It operates more than 4,300 EV chargers and, according to the Recharge Insights Report, provided 802,067 charging sessions in Q2 of 2023. From April to June of 2023, the company expanded its network with a record of 338 new chargers. In the coming years, Recharge will invest heavily in its charging infrastructure. The company is also planning to enter Denmark later in 2022.

Today, Recharge continues to offer Kempower DC fast charging solutions across its rapid charging network in Norway, Sweden and Finland.

“We have been cooperating with Kempower since the very beginning. We’ve liked the mission and the vision the company has and how Kempower has delivered.”

Sami Saarilahti, Country Director Denmark at Recharge

“Kempower is a good fit for our needs. We appreciate the company’s efforts to continuously improve the user interface and user experience of their fast chargers through data and knowledge,” Elise comments.

On the topic of customer feedback, Elise shares:

We have received good feedback from our B2B customers on the footprint of Kempower chargers and the possibilities of intelligent load balancing. Customers have also said that the chargers are easy to use and provide good information throughout the charging session

Sustainable and efficient use of resources is important to Recharge in all areas of its operations.

Elise explains further, “by using the Kempower charging system, we can use resources sustainably in terms of both space requirements and electric grid capacity. The system allows us to have multiple satellites and intelligently balance the load. Therefore, we can serve both peak days and normal traffic conditions without using more capacity than needed.”

We see Kempower as a forward-looking supplier that is doing its part in pushing the development of charging infrastructure forward. If there are any bugs or issues, Kempower aims to fix and improve them continuously

Elise Thorvaldsen

Tackling future challenges with smart technology

In 2021, 64.5% of all new passenger cars sold in Norway were electric[1]. The Norwegian EV Association has estimated that 80% of all new cars in Norway will be electric in 2022.

As the number of EVs is growing faster than the number of charging points available, queuing has already become a challenge in Norway. For now, queuing is mostly a problem only on peak days. However, Recharge believes that if it cannot speed up construction due to external barriers, like long delivery times, when applying for grid capacity, queuing will also become a challenge on weekdays. This problem will be seen in other markets too.

Recharge has found help with queuing and grid capacity challenges by using Kempower’s ChargEye backend and cloud solutions.

Using the Kempower system is important for queue mitigation, as well as a good tool in areas where grid capacity is lower. By installing a large number of satellites with intelligent load balancing, we can take care of peak periods in a sustainable way

Charging Forward in Maritime Transport: Electrifying Ports, Ships, and Boats

Pressure for maritime sector to take climate action

Electrification is recognized as one of the most effective ways of decarbonizing and reversing climate change. Therefore, it makes sense that international organizations are looking towards the seas to follow the example given by electric vehicles on land.

The International Maritime Organization has issued a directive to cut 50% of emissions by 2050, so boats and ships are the clear targets that need to cut carbon emissions.

In recent years, the main focus has been on electrifying larger ships and ferries, but smaller workboats and leisure vessels are important too for a complete electrification transition in the maritime industry. To help meet market demand for the uptake in electric boats, Kempower has increased its focus on electric marine solutions and delivered one of its first maritime projects.

Challenges of electrifying maritime transport

Although the growth in electric boat adoption is a good thing, currently, there are not enough charging stations to support owners of electric vessels. The lack of charging infrastructure makes operating electric boats even harder since they have a shorter travel range than their fossil fuel-powered counterparts. To overcome these challenges, a comprehensive network is a necessity to ensure a successful electrification transition.

“Charging infrastructure is critical for the adoption of electrical boats. Most of the charging will happen at your home dock with slow charging overnight, but to enable long-distance and high-speed traveling, we need a network of fast chargers to support that. Providers like Plug and Kempower are working to make this a reality,”

comments Kjetil Watnedal, Chief Digital Officer at Evoy.

On a positive note, the maritime industry has a benchmark to look to as the EV industry on land sets a good example of how charging can be successful for the sea as well. For example, some charging solution providers are pushing to set a standard for all marine-capable charging stations to include CCS2 connectors, the fast-charging plug standard in Europe that supports both AC and DC charging.

How an electric motor producer, EV charging provider, and shore power supplier are making e-boat a reality

Like in the EV industry, Norway is the forerunner in electrifying the marine sector. So, it makes sense that Kempower, a company that designs and manufactures DC fast charging solutions for electric vehicles, chose Norway to deliver its first e-boat charging solutions. Kempower’s journey to electrifying marine transport starts with two local Norwegian companies, Plug and Evoy. Plug develops, builds, and operates facilities that supply ships with shore power, while Evoy creates sustainable electric motor systems to accelerate the shift to emission-free electric boating.

Plug has started to build a network for boat charging with Kempower’s DC fast charging solutions. Plug’s selected seaside charging locations in Norway feature Kempower Satellites and Kempower Power Units, which are supported by the cloud and data management solution Kempower ChargEye.

The first installation in the town of Florø, in the municipality of Kinn, has two Kempower Satellites, one serving cars and the other boats. To be able to serve even better its end-users, the charging speed was recently upgraded from 150 kW of power to 200 kW.

The town of Rosendal, in the Tysnes municipality, has two Kempower Satellites installed on a floating dock at the town’s main pier. This station can deliver a total of 400 kW of charging power or 200 kW per Kempower Satellite.

The town of Våge, also in the Tysnes municipality, recently installed its first fast chargers, taking advantage of the multimodality of Kempower chargers. With Kempower’s flexible system, four of the chargers are available for EV charging in the parking lot, and two are available for boat charging on a floating dock. This station in Våge can be considered the world’s most powerful, publicly available charging site for the combination of cars and boats. The charging site has a total power capacity of 600 kW and each of the boat charging outlets can deliver up to 220 kW of charging power.

The benefits of Kempower’s marine vessel charging system

With the small footprint of the Kempower Satellite chargers, Kempower’s electric boat charging system is ideal for floating pontoon piers and docks. The Våge charging station in Norway has multiple advantages with its dynamic functionality. At this charging hub, power can be distributed between both electric cars and electric vessels. This increases the return on investment for Plug, which is supplying the power for these chargers.

“For Plug, it was important, to choose a partner that could deliver systems, technology, and support. We need to have suppliers that have good technical equipment and good support lines. We have seen that not many providers have this satellite principle, where we have a centralized power unit and can have dynamic power sharing between the satellites. This is something unique that Kempower has, and it fits very well for marine use,”

says Bjørn Hønsi Følling, Head of Maritime Charging at Plug.

Additionally, the Kempower charging system is ideal because it is practical to scale up the number of chargers to the charging station as the number of electric vessels on the water increases.

Harsh environments are to be expected at marinas and boat harbours, so charging solutions must be able to withstand these challenging conditions. Kempower’s technology features a galvanically-isolated DC supply which helps to prevent corrosion failures. The company’s durable chargers also contain more protection than required by industry standards. Environmental proofing protects more than just the casing that houses the chargers, it also protects the electronics inside. The layout of the charger is designed so that it repels elements such as dust and condensation.

“We have some challenges with the different and harsh weather conditions in Norway, especially in the winter. The Kempower Satellites, which are close to waterproof, can be installed very near where the charging is needed, on a floating dock,” comments Bjørn Hønsi Følling from Plug.

Next steps for growth in the marine sector

Kempower, Plug, and Evoy have identified areas for further charging stations in Norway, with plans to expand to different countries.

“Electric leisure vessels and boats are already a reality. At Kempower, we want to play our part in driving the electric marine and boating industry forward by offering the most versatile and user-friendly charging solutions on the market,” says Jesse Makkonen, Segment Owner, Marine and Ports at Kempower.

“With the world struggling with climate change and an increased focus on sustainability, this will drive the move toward greener solutions, also in the marine environment,” states Kjetil Watnedal from Evoy.

“For some years ago, some people were laughing at electric boats. Today, they admit that this is the future, and this is something they want. This is also the motivation for Plug. We want to step up and build a charging network, publicly available in Norway, in Northern Europe, and in the rest of the world,” Bjørn Hønsi Følling from Plug, concludes.

Kempower Helps Transform Service Station & Restaurant into a Must-Stop EV Charging Station

A family-owned retail business with a big dream of EV charging

When business owner Jussi Jaakkola noticed electric cars becoming more popular in 2018, he knew it was time to take advantage of this new form of traffic for his business.

Jussi owns Oulunbaari, a service station and restaurant in Oulu, Finland. The business has been in the Jaakkola family for over 30 years. They’ve been able to sustain business through their delicious food offerings, convenient location near the highway and a loyal customer base from travelers over the years.

But, with the ever-present competition of service stations and fast-food restaurants located in the same area, Oulunbaari needed an extra spark to stay ahead and attract new customers. That new spark was offering an electric vehicle charging station.

Jussi had hoped that a new charging station would attract EV drivers who needed to recharge their car batteries and refuel their stomachs. He knew that if he could get new drivers to come & charge at the station, then Oulunbaari’s diverse offerings would do the rest to increase in-store purchases.

“Kempower has brought us more electric car drivers. We have benefited from the chargers by offering our customers power, which means that they can also stop by for a meal and a coffee.”

Jussi Jaakkola, Oulunbaari Business Owner

A first attempt at offering EV charging didn’t go as planned

A few years ago, Oulunbaari’s first attempt at offering EV charging didn’t make the significant impact they were hoping for. The restaurant and service station only had one 50 kW charger available.  It didn’t allow multiple vehicles to charge at once nor did it provide enough charging power for many EVs on the market.

With these shortcomings, Oulunbaari’s first EV charging equipment that they’d deployed didn’t draw in a substantial amount of EV drivers.

That’s when Jussi made the business decision to seek out a charging solution that could provide more power and a stand-out user-experience for EV drivers.

How Kempower made Oulunbaari’s EV charging dreams a reality

During his research, Jussi stumbled across a Finnish EV fast charging solutions provider named Kempower. He was instantly interested in Kempower’s dynamic Satellite charging system.

Jussi shares that “we chose Kempower as a partner because they are local, have the best products on the market and use a flexible system.”

The unique EV charging system Kempower provided Oulunbaari

From the beginning, Jussi knew that he wanted to serve as many electric car drivers as possible at his charging site. This mindset works well with Kempower’s offering of dynamic charging solutions.

Jussi comments on the Kempower’s dynamic system: “Kempower differs from its competitors with its ease-of-use and dynamic power management, which provides cars with the exact amount of energy.”

Currently, Oulunbaari’s charging station features six Kempower Satellites with six CCS2 plugs, and a Kempower Power Unit.

With Kempower’s dynamic power sharing solution, a limited amount of power can be shared between several different satellite charging points depending on how many cars need power.

So, whether six cars need to charge at the same time, or only one car needs to charge, the Kempower dynamic charging system can optimize the amount of power distributed. There’s no need to pull maximum power from the grid at all times. By offering more charging points, Jussi is able to provide more opportunities for drivers to plug in and visit his store. Without multiple charging points, it would force drivers to visit the next EV charging station, since there would be no charging availability.

How Oulunbaari uses Kempower ChargEye, a charging management software

Pricing was also important to Jussi. He wanted to utilize a pricing strategy that would be transparent and fair for all drivers. So, kwh-based pricing was the best strategy. With this pricing scheme it wouldn’t cause drivers to rush their leisure time inside the store in order to rush back out to their charging session.

With Kempower ChargEye, a cloud-based charging management system, business owners can decide how they want to display pricing and other branded advertisements. Jussi has also enjoyed the different functionalities of Kempower ChargEye from a business owner’s perspective. He shares:

“I use Kempower ChargEye every day. It’s fantastic and I’m hooked. I like to look at the charging power being used, what type of EVs come to charge, and how many kW each car is using [in ChargEye]. The dynamic charging and ChargEye software is the most unique thing that separates Kempower from the others.”

Jussi Jaakkola

EV drivers also benefit from Kempower ChargEye. One popular feature is how drivers can scan the QR code on the charger to conveniently follow their charging status on their phone without the need of additional apps.

Oulunbaari powers 1,200 successful charging sessions in 3 months

Since opening the charging station in December of 2022, Jussi Jaakkola has been satisfied with Kempower’s dynamic charging solutions. He also looks forward to the possibility and ease of scaling up the charging station with Kempower’s charging solutions, as electric traffic increases.

“Kempower’s solutions are very flexible. We can easily increase power and the number of charging points, if necessary.”

Jussi Jaakkola, OUlunbaari Business Owner

EV drivers who have charged with the Kempower chargers at Oulunbaari have been impressed with the user-friendliness of the Kempower chargers and the ability to pay with card. Often at EV charging stations, EV drivers need to pay within a downloaded app, online, or with an RFID tag. So, drivers appreciate the convenience of being able to pay at a payment terminal at the Oulunbaari charging station.

In quarter 1 of 2023, there have been around 1,200 successful charging sessions at Oulunbaari’s EV charging station with Kempower chargers.

On average, EV drivers have spent 22 minutes for their fast-charging sessions and the longest session has been around 95 minutes.

End note: Oulunbaari is a part of the Neste fueling station network, so the charging site development at Oulunbaari is aligned with the Neste MY Renewable Charging rollout across Finland. In this case, Neste was also a charging partner for this charging site at Oulunbaari.

Revolutionizing the UK’s Rapid EV Charging Infrastructure

In 2020, the UK declared its intention to become one of the fastest nations in the world to decarbonize its road transport sector. With the sales of battery-powered EVs soaring in the country, the next step for a smooth transition to e-mobility is creating fair and scalable charging networks for UK EV drivers.

Partnering with one of the UK’s largest public charging networks

Last year, Osprey Charging, one of the UK’s largest and fastest-growing public rapid EV charging networks, announced its ambition to make EV charging anxiety a thing of the past. To accomplish this, it plans to install over 150 high-powered EV charging hubs across the UK by 2025, some of which will feature Kempower technology.

A total of 1,500 150-175KW rapid chargers will be installed on strategic A-roads and adjacent to motorways as part of a £75 million nationwide rollout. Osprey Charging selected the Kempower Satellite charger with a Kempower Power Unit for the hubs. Additionally, Kempower Chargeye software is included in the backend to optimize the user experience for drivers, marking the first time this game-changing charger optimization technology will be deployed publicly in the UK.

Curing charging anxiety with multiple high-powered chargers on a single site

Kempower chargers work dynamically to optimize charging across multiple vehicles at the same charging hub. They allow power to be distributed based on demand, which varies significantly between vehicles due to the maximum charging rate of each model and its battery percentage at the point of charge.

This power management can significantly reduce waiting times for charging, maximizing the speed and availability of chargers for drivers and increasing consumer footfall for the landowners hosting the hubs. The load-balancing technology also means grid connections can be optimized, allowing several high-power chargers to be installed per site and offering higher charging speeds without requiring more grid power.

Kempower’s fast charging technology allows EV drivers to get the most out of their charging sessions while reducing queuing times.

Increasing accessibility for all EV drivers

Providing access to e-mobility for even more drivers in the UK is crucial to Osprey Charging. That’s why the company has made accessibility a vital element in the rollout of its rapid charging hubs featuring Kempower technology.

One of the first hubs to open as part of the project is located at the Paisley Pear Pub and Restaurant in the UK town of Brackley. The hub is the UK’s first accessibly designed rapid charging hub, comprising eight 150kW Kempower Satellite charging systems. The Kempower chargers are strategically positioned in a user-friendly layout with more space for access to support drivers of all physical abilities. Furthermore, the charging cables are spring-loaded and situated on a gantry, which carries most of the weight and makes it easy to bring the cable to a vehicle.

The physical footprint of each Kempower Charging Satellite is also 74% smaller than the industry average. A smaller footprint further improves accessibility for movement around the chargers and allows space for more chargers.

As a result of Osprey Charging’s emphasis on accessibility, the Paisley Pear location received an accessibility score of 4.6 out of 5 from the independent, public EV charging endorsement body ChargeSafe. This impressive score is the highest accessibility score recorded by ChargeSafe on the UK network.

Kempower chargers at Osprey charging station

The status of the rollout

Osprey Charging expects five charging hubs to be operational by the end of 2022. These are located:

  • On the M40 in Banbury
  • On the A43 in Brackley
  • On the A127 in Essex
  • On the A14 in Suffolk
  • On the A1423 in Wolverhampton

The rollout has faced a few hurdles that Osprey Charging and the Kempower UK team are overcoming together. A significant challenge relates to energizing the hubs, including getting enough power to the sites and dealing with grid constraints. Further considerations include handling leases for existing substations, specifically the owner and legalities associated with providing the power, and who owns excess energy at new substations.

To help overcome these challenges, Kempower’s UK team and Osprey Charging are developing strong relationships with the relevant distribution network operators (DNOs). The two companies are also engaging with independent DNOs, alternative network operators that adopt and maintain the new assets and can do most of the work relating to making a hub operational when appropriate.

Positive customer feedback and a blossoming partnership

So far, the Osprey Charging hubs have received overwhelmingly positive feedback from EV drivers. The main question that Kempower and Osprey Charging are asked is why there aren’t more hubs open yet, which is a sentiment shared by both parties.

The project’s ongoing success can be traced back to the excellent relationship Kempower built with Osprey Charging. The two teams are in constant communication, collaboratively tackling any challenges and pushing forward progress in the same direction.

Building a market-leading EV charging network across Finland

S Group is a customer-owned Finnish network of companies in the retail and service sectors. With over 1,800 outlets in Finland, the organization operates in areas including supermarkets, department, hardware and speciality stores, service stations and travel and hospitality venues.

In 2012, S Group began offering EV charging to its customers. Initially, the company implemented the service with many different partners. However, as e-mobility adoption and development accelerated, the retailer realized that it needed to rethink its entire charging service. S Group’s primary goal was to centralize its charging operations and create a customer-oriented service of its own.

Delivering an excellent customer experience

The most essential qualities S Group was looking for from its new charging partner was customer centricity and reliability. The company tested various charging systems to see how they worked in practice before ultimately selecting Kempower as its preferred partner of choice.

Our technology matched S Group’s requirements more than any other potential suppliers. For instance, the modularity of our chargers was crucial, as S Group wanted to be able to install multiple charge points side-by-side to meet customer demand easily. Additionally, the scalability of our solution also enables the company to add chargers to each charging hub as demand increases.

Another benefit is that our charging cables come from above, so they don’t hang on the ground. S Group tested many different cable types from various vendors and frequently found that heavy cables ended up on the ground. If cables are left on the ground during the winter months, they will freeze, making charging difficult. This is not the case with our charging solutions.

Additionally, the ease-of-use of our chargers and the fact they are designed with EV drivers in mind meant we shared a similar mindset with S Group, which was evident from the very early stages of the project.

A fast rollout and positive reaction

The entire network operates under the ABC Charging brand. The first chargers were delivered to S Group’s grocery stores in Helsinki’s metropolitan area in April 2021. By the end of the year, the company had set up 50 charging hubs featuring Kempower power unit and Kempower Satellite chargers across Finland.

When rolling out the chargers and charging hubs, S Group ensures that the correct type of charger is in the right place, depending on its location and how much time customers typically spend there. It is expected that the range of charging services will expand as S Group’s understanding of the network’s users grows. Furthermore, all of the chargers in the ABC Charging network are powered through wind power, further adding to its sustainability credentials as it supports the electrification transition in Finland’s transportation sector.

Our collaboration with Kempower has been excellent so far. We share many similar values, including a spirit of development where we plan and test the solutions together and coach one another. Together, we are continually developing our service for the benefit of our customers, such as by introducing kilowatt-hour pricing for charging services. The introduction of this service required much work from both companies, but it has been well-received by customers and added to the very positive feedback the ABC Charging network has received so far.

Facilitating Epiroc’s electric transition

Epiroc is a leading productivity and sustainability partner for the mining and infrastructure industries. To capitalize on the growing numbers of global mining companies looking to upgrade their fleets to battery vehicles, Epiroc is transitioning to an electric portfolio. The company aims to offer its complete product range to customers as a zero-emission option, for underground division by 2025 followed by all other divisions by 2030.

To support this goal, Epiroc decided to enhance its offering by including chargers to provide its customers with a complete package and the best possible experience. It knew that it needed to team up with a charger manufacturer, subsequently choosing Kempower as its partner for charging equipment and software. The partnership is groundbreaking in the mining industry, with the solid close collaboration furthering the entire mining industry and the long-term commitment offering both companies a competitive advantage.

Mining requires robust and resilient infrastructure

Epiroc offers its customers a complete solution, including commissioning through regular distribution channels and customized service agreements for service and maintenance.

However, before partnering with Kempower, it struggled to find chargers to add to its customer offering capable of operating in the challenging conditions faced in the mining industry. Mines are typically located in very harsh environments, while chargers must be positioned strategically where vehicles will often pass. This high usage leads to a significant dust build-up, which usually ends up in the chargers and potentially affects performance. This is what brought our products to Epiroc’s attention. Our chargers are specifically designed to perform exceptionally no matter the season or location, from the tremendously cold winter months of Finland to the intense Australian summer heat.

Ongoing development benefitting all parties

The partnership has come a long way since Epiroc first ordered, received and tested our equipment in mid-2020 and has proven beneficial for both Kempower and Epiroc, partly due to the flexibility of products offered through the collaboration. Furthermore, both companies are very humble and recognize the other party’s expertise, regularly implementing product and software improvements.

One of the reasons Epiroc chose Kempower as a partner was the possibility of positively affecting our products’ development. For instance, the first Kempower Power Unit it purchased has seen improvements to the door and roof by increasing their robustness. The company has also provided detailed feedback on Kempower ChargEye software. Epiroc appreciates that Kempower listens to its demands and take the time to implement the changes it requests.

As well as improving the service Epiroc offers its customers, this feedback also delivers more comprehensive benefits. Improvements suggested by other customers are implemented on Epiroc’s products, while Epiroc’s ideas have enhanced Kempower’s competitiveness in other markets. Additionally, proving that chargers can operate effectively in underground mining environments means that they can be used anywhere, for any purpose – increasing the take-up of e-mobility and electrification generally.

The best thing about working with Kempower is the feeling that they are not just our supplier, but that they are our partner. The team’s experts are transparent and listen to our ideas and needs to improve the company’s products. As a result, we are working together to create a continuously improved product benefitting both companies, which is a real win-win situation.
